Tobacco growing remains a significant agricultural activity in Brazil.  According to Afubra (www.afubra.com.br), annual production of all types of tobacco leaf has been approximate 744,000 t years 2008/09.  The majority of the tobacco leaf, some 95%, is grown in the southern states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná.  The remaining 5% is produced in the northeast states of Bahia and Alagoas.  It is estimated that tobacco production provides a livelihood to some 223,000 families in these states.  Brazil is the second largest tobacco growing country and the largest exporter of tobacco in the world, according to the Tobacco Industry Union, SindiTabaco (www.sinditabaco.com.br).
